I’m super pumped to be participating in this year’s Ultimate Upcycle Challenge: DIY Runway, on display at the Ottawa Fall Home Show from Thursday, September 29th until Sunday, October 2nd! Whether I am helping women find their own true style through my career as an Independent Cabi Stylist, or I am styling images and clients’ walls as their custom photographer, my goal is always the same – to positively affect the lives of others through the creation of timeless looks and lasting relationships. So the fact that this challenge is all about creativity, style and supporting local charities makes me very proud to be a participant! Check out all of this year’s participants here.
First, I was asked to select my favourite fashion piece as inspiration for my upcycle. I chose Cabi’s Bloom Cami from our Fall 2016 Collection! You can browse the complete Fall designer line here.
Then I chose a pre-loved item from Habitat for Humanity’s ReStore to be upcycled into a home décor piece. If you haven’t been there, then run, don’t walk! There are so many treasures to be found!! I chose to upcycle this old frame.
Drawing on the Bloom Cami as inspiration, I commissioned floral designer extraordinaire, Christina Ouellet of The Flower Factory, to design an arrangement that would incorporate some of the colours from the cami and compliment a gold frame. Then I photographed the arrangement in a way to showcase the big, colourful blooms. The resulting image was a 24×36 professional print, with linen texture for look, lustre coating for protection, and mounted on styrene for stability.
The next step was to upcycle the frame and I did so with paint supplies that were generously provided by Rustoleum Canada for this challenge! I used their Krud Kutter Gloss-Off to prepare the surface of the frame and the Specialty Metallic Spray in gold for a shiny metallic finish. Here’s the resulting upcycle – a substantial piece of wall art in need of a loving home!
See and bid on this item and more at the Ottawa Fall Home Show! Proceeds will support Habitat for Humanity Greater Ottawa Region and the #StuStrong campaign at the Ottawa Hospital!
